3rd Ward Philly presents Sense Inspired Craftsmanship
October 10 | 7:00PM to 11:00PM (opening reception)
3rd Ward Philly 1227 North 4th Street
Free and open to the public.
Exhibit on view through October 31
Join 3rd Ward for the opening reception of a group exhibition highlighting the 3rd Ward interpretation of sense inspired craftsmanship; including works by the talented instructors and staff at 3rd Ward, including Stephanie Santos, The Volta Organics, Jessa Stevens, and Chris Winterstein.
The group exhibition is meant to highlight individual crafts and the processes behind them with the public. Set amongst the backdrop of this year’s Festival theme, Experience Design!, the exhibit will showcase “sense inspired” skills such as dip-dyeing, Shibori scarf making, komucha brewing, and soap making. Information will be available on-site for full course registration in these disciplines being held throughout the month.
Located in what was once known as the “Workshop of the World”, 3rd Ward Philadelphia encompasses 27,000 square feet of collaborative work space, classrooms and creative facilities in Philly’s Northern Liberties/Old Kensington neighborhood, and is comprised of three buildings — a 3-story brick warehouse, an historic church, and a single-story concrete warehouse. 3rd Ward offers hundreds of classes in technology, craftsmanship, food/beverage, art and design taught by a community of Philadelphia makers.
Nicole Hutnyk, of 3rd Ward, tells me she, “hopes the show will not only inspire but also intrigue individuals to tap into their own talent and desire to learn these various techniques and processes behind the craftsmanship by enrolling in the course offerings at 3rd Ward.”
Philadelphia is a city of makers
3rd Ward, whose roots are planted in Brooklyn, started offering classes in their gorgeously renovated Philadelphia facility this past summer. Hutnyk says, “Philadelphia is a city of makers that not only inspire us, but also fuel our community and us at 3rd Ward. There is an extreme amount of skill and talent in every corner of the city and we absolutely thrive off of it. Whether it’s through gallery space, maker meet-ups or our course offerings we are always looking for ways to support the community.” Besides an array of ever-growing classes, 3rd Ward hosts events in their event spaces and galleries; including exhibitions, fashion shows, film screenings, and a weekly Drink N’ Draw (live figure drawing and drinks!) on Wednesday evenings. “We are really excited to start our open shop program for makers in the fields of metalsmithing, woodworking, jewelry, textiles, and art.”
DesignPhiladelphia’s 9th Annual Festival, EXPERIENCEdesign! kicks off this year on the evening of October 9th with PopUp Place and festival events running from October 10 through 18. As a signature event of the Center for Architecture, DesignPhiladelphia showcases Philadelphia’s strong design and creative communities through more than 100 exhibitions, workshops, tours, lectures, open studios, and parties that celebrate design’s many dimensions, dynamics, and applications.
To give you a sneak peek of things to come, we will be featuring 24 events on our blog; discussing their details and introducing you to the people behind them. Join us on Facebook and Twitter – where you can catch all 2013 Festival announcements and info!
