A Clean Break
Description: Wexler Gallery presents new work by innovative furniture artist Matthias Pliessnig. Pliessnig is a designer and builder questioning what is furniture and what is wood. An artist trying to stay "truer to the material, by utilizing the elastic possibilities of the material," Pliessnig combines boat-building techniques with furniture building techniques. Much of his work meditates on the thought that "for centuries we've been subverting wood to our will; lumber mills and furniture factories spit out rectilinear shapes that fit nicely onto trucks, but have little to do with the inherent properties of a tree."

Description: Join us for the (almost) Grand Opening of Calderwood 2 – Design 1960-1980. Furniture, objects, accessories and lighting that blew the lid off conventional and replaced it with innovation in design and execution. The period-themed reception will be a tribute to the renaissance of imagination and creativity of the 60s, and 70s. Did someone say quiche? Was that a pig-in-a-blanket that just went by? Care for a glass of Tang or some Gatorade? Dust off your platform shoes. Iron your mini-dress. Get out your black eyeliner. Come in style. Be there or be square. Located across the street from Marc Vetri’s highly acclaimed restaurant Osteria and the chic Lofts at 640, Calderwood 2 adds to the revitalization of North Broad Street. Look for a (finally) grand opening in a few more months. Design in the time of mod.pop.op.fab.glam. Brought to you by The Calderwoods.

Description: User-Centered Design: Keeping It Real
Join us as our panelists discuss why great design isn't just about design. It's about people.
ABOUT THE DISCUSSION
As design professionals, we strive to create great products and great experiences, both physical and virtual, for the general public or niche markets. But many times – the cynic would say most of the time – we miss the mark. The world is full of things that are difficult and frustrating to use. And that's because designers make assumptions about how users think and do things.
Great design is user-centric design.
User-centered design (UCD) is an approach that places the user at the center of the design process from the beginning. By understanding real people's needs and behaviors during the conception and refinement of a design, we can ensure that a new product succeeds.
This discussion will include perspectives on user-centered design from professionals who create experiences in the fields of architecture, interactive design, and product design. Each panelist will present examples and strategies relevant to practitioners of user-centric design in any discipline.
Those interested in architecture, graphic design, human factors, information architecture, interaction design, product design, usability, and user experience will find the discussion highly informative and challenging.

Description: Ongoing Sept 18 - Oct 26, 2008. The work of London-based Daniel Eatock (b.1975) constitutes an inventive response to the everyday shaped by a keen sensitivity to formal and conceptual coincidence. Trained as a designer with clients that include the BBC and the Walker Art Center, Eatock strives to avoid subjective composition while reorienting the given values of readymade objects, standards, and procedures. Unforeseen approaches to familiar problems (such as domestic storage & display, stationery, and website design), join more eccentric challenges, such as his ongoing attempts to draw a perfect freehand circle, sustain a helium balloon in constant equilibrium, or carry a glass of seawater from Brighton to London via public transport. These and other works—many realized specifically for this exhibition—consistently combine wry humor with a serial, reductive logic to create contingent forms of order amidst the chaos of contemporary life. "Extra Medium" is Eatock's first individual exhibition in the United States and coincides with the publication of Imprint, a new monograph from Princeton Architectural Press.

Description: Joyce J. Scott’s performances, lectures and exhibitions have played an important role in creating visibility for artists of color in the United States and Europe for more than 45 years. For that reason, Snyderman-Works Galleries is honored to present her first-ever solo exhibition in Philadelphia. The installation at Snyderman-Works Galleries will occupy most of the 3000 square foot main exhibition space. A forceful combination of historian, narrator and maker, nothing is off limits for Scott. She uses an unexpectedly heterogeneous array of materials - beadwork, hand-blown glass, appropriated African sculptures and masks, found objects- skillfully combining them into narrative sculptures. Beaded figures and heads perch on the edge of objects, investing them with a seemingly totemic role. The imagery is fierce in its energy as it is rich in color and texture, but so exquisitely made as if to say that at the end of adversity there can be ethereal beauty.
Solo exhibit by Joyce Scott, through November 15, 2008. Full color catalogue available.
