Description: Join host ARCWheeler, the project's developer, and other project participants for this exclusive sneak peek, guided hard hat tour of 10 Rittenhouse Square, the newest luxury residential building to open in Philadelphia.
10 Rittenhouse Square is a luxury residential building currently under construction in Philadelphia's famed Rittenhouse Square. 10 Rittenhouse Square is designed by world-renowned Robert A.M. Stern Architects, their first residential high-rise in Philadelphia. To preserve Philadelphia's long-standing architectural tradition, the building incorporates three landmark structures while adding a 33-story red-brick and limestone tower behind them. The Beaux Arts façade of the landmark Rittenhouse Club was restored, and the building is now home to Barneys New York CO-OP and full-floor townhome spaces. Established in 1875 as the Social Arts Club, the Rittenhouse Club was one of the premier private clubs among Philadelphia gentlemen, who considered membership a symbol of power and influence. The Rittenhouse Club Townhouse Condominiums are the next chapter of history on the Square. 10 Rittenhouse Square will offer 135 luxury studio, one, two, three bedroom and full floor penthouse residences, access to high end retail including Barney's CO-OP, Barnes and Noble, Elizabeth Arden's Red Door Spa, and a to-be-named marquis restaurant.

Description: Join us for a three part panel discussion exploring the role of Design and Design Education in relation to partnerships with Universities, Corporations, and Non-Profits.
Panel 1: Design Education (Tuesday, October 13)
This panel will explore possible futures for design education within the context of increasingly complex design problems by which students will be challenged. Such terms as "post-disciplinary" and "transformational design" describe a more collaborative and integrated systems-based approach to design that requires further articulation and discussion if it is to effectively inform current design pedagogy. Moderator: Chris Garvin, Dean - College of Media Arts and Communications, UArts
Panel 2: Universities and Corporation (Wednesday, October 14)
This panel explores the parameters of the partnerships formed between educational institutions and businesses. As nodal, project-based learning becomes more fundamental to design education, such relationships need to be refined. Yet many questions present themselves: What are the expectations, contractual terms, and incentives in these partnerships? What are the intellectual property issues? Should business and entrepreneurship be more emphasized as areas of design instruction in general? How best can design education contribute to and benefit from integration into the so-called creative economy? Moderator: Jonas Milder, Chair - MID, UArts
Panel 3: Universities and Non-Profits (Thursday, October 15)
The non-profit sector and local communities present unique opportunities for design education. As is the case with relationships with the business community, so must the specific parameters of partnerships between educational institutions and surrounding communities be further defined. In particular: Is the participatory design approach the most effective kind of working relationship? What is the design institution's responsibility to these stakeholders? What are the ethical issues? How do we assess who and how of design's impact? What are the factors influencing local vs. non-local partnerships? Moderator: Jeremy Beaudry, Assistant Professor - Multimedia, UArts
All three panels will run 5:00PM - 7:00PM at 211 S. Broad St, 5th Floor. Please visit the Studio Next Exhibition space at 313 S. Broad Street to see the work informing the panel conversations.

Description: Philadelphia's affordability, diverse neighborhoods and "under the radar" personality have fueled a robust and growing culture of design over the past decade. All of the liabilities that historically provided the City with negative attention - crime, trash, and lack of economic growth - have provided a context within which a diverse creative community has emerged on its own terms. This "work in progress" mentality proved to be a tremendous advantage for architects during the recent real estate boom as Philadelphia quickly established itself as a lifestyle destination on the back of new luxury housing, urban mixed-use development, and a strong interest in greening. The city appears to be going through a new evolution in its design identity and architecture is clearly playing a key role in the process.
There are clear trends in common among the offices represented in the exhibition. Many of the firms have strong connections among the four schools of architecture in Philadelphia. These links promote a true sense of praxis where client-based construction and academic pursuits cross fertilize.
This exhibition looks to reveal the critical mass of innovative design practices that have grown out of this robust context. Some of the offices have already gained national recognition while others are start-ups that are just beginning to make their marks. The common thread running through the work is a sense of experimentation and enthusiasm for the future. The hope is that by bringing this collection of work together that new and interesting ideas, dialogues, and relationships will follow.
This exhibition opens Thursday, October 8th at noon and will run until Sunday, October 25th.

Temporary, interim, or intermittent uses are part of a growing trend for responding creatively to cities in transition. Last year, the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) invited an international group of designers to Cleveland to create Pop Up City, a series of projects utilizing vacant sites for just one day. Pop Up City's temporary interventions offered an engaging way to test ideas for urban rejuvenation and counteract the negative mindset of a shrinking city. Join CUDC's Terry Schwarz to discuss these projects, their impact, and the potential of temporary uses in rethinking and rebuilding transitional cities and neighborhoods.
